Hi, I'm Shanice
A little about who I am, how I got here, and why I care so much about the way families are supported to feed their babies.
Shanice · Infant Feeding Specialist
When I became a mother in 2016, I never imagined it would change the course of my career.
Like so many new parents, I found breastfeeding much harder than I expected. What stayed with me most wasn't just the challenges I faced, but how difficult it was to find the right support once I was home. I remember wishing someone would simply sit beside me, listen without judgement, and help me find a way forward.
That experience inspired me to train with the NCT as a Breastfeeding Peer Supporter, and it completely changed the direction of my career.
Over the years, I discovered not only a passion for infant feeding, but for supporting women through one of the biggest transitions of their lives. I became the person I wish I'd had when I was a new mother.
My career began within the NHS, supporting families through maternity and community services. I started as a Breastfeeding Peer Supporter, sitting beside parents in some of their most vulnerable moments, holding space while they found their way. Over the years, that work grew into roles I never imagined when I began.
I became a Baby Feeding Service Manager, leading and shaping infant feeding support across services, and then a UNICEF Baby Friendly Lead, championing evidence-based, family-centred feeding care at a whole-service level. I've trained and mentored other supporters, reviewed the research, and helped build the kind of care I always wished more families could reach.
My journey so far
Breastfeeding Peer Supporter
NHS maternity, running a tongue-tie drop-in group and clinic, paediatrics and A&E.
Baby Feeding Service Manager
Leading and mentoring a team of infant feeding specialists, and shaping support across busy maternity and community services with 4,500 births a year.
UNICEF Baby Friendly Lead
Training midwives, neonatal nurses, doctors, support workers, early years and local government.
Founder, Held by Shanice
Bringing that same expertise to families privately, with the unhurried time and genuine warmth to truly help.
Why I now work privately
Within busy NHS services, there's rarely enough time to sit with a family and really listen.
I started Held by Shanice to give families the time and continuity of care that isn't always possible in the NHS; watching a whole feed, understanding your world, and staying alongside you afterwards. No rushing, no judgement, no one-size-fits-all rulebook.
Held by Shanice is the space I wish had existed when I became a mother.
My approach
My practice is grounded in evidence, but it's never cold or clinical. I bring the research and the years of experience; you bring your baby, your instincts and your goals. Together we find what actually works for your family, whether that's breastfeeding, bottle feeding, combination feeding, or something in between.
However you feed your baby, you will always be met with kindness here. That's a promise.
Every family deserves to feel heard, supported and confident in how they feed their baby. If I can help you feel even a little more like yourself again, then I've done my job.
